Introduction to OSP: Influencers blog tasks

 Read this article in The Week magazine on the rise of social media influencers and answer the following questions:  

1) What years did YouTube, Twitter and Instagram launch?

YouTube 2005
Twitter: 2006
Instagram: 2010

2) What is the definition of an influencer?

A person who has become well known through regular social media posts and is able to promote a product or service by recommending or using it online.

3) Give an example of an influencer and how many followers they have. Try and add some additional information, brand associations or other statistics if you can.

An example of a prominent influencer is Khaby Lame, who is the most-followed individual on TikTok with over 160 million followers as of December 2025. 

4) How big is the influencer industry according to the article?

$8 billion USD a year,

5) What are the problems associated with being an influencer?

Being an influencer involves significant psychological, professional, and personal problems that can impact mental health, privacy, and long-term career stability

6) Why is it suggested that audiences actually like being sold products by influencers?

Audiences like being sold products by influencers because they foster a sense of trust and authenticity.
 
7) What representation of beauty is often found on Instagram or other influencer sites?

On Instagram and other influencer sites, the prevalent beauty representation is the "Instagram  Face" and the "slim-thick" body ideal. 

8) What is YOUR opinion on influencers? Are they a positive or negative influence on our society and culture? Why?

My opinion on most influencers is positive because they use some of the money they get online to give to charities or give back o fans. Some infuencers also feed the homeless in person and help other people in need.
