Industries: Ownership and control

  1) What is a   conglomerate  in the media industries?  Companies that own lots of subsidiaries. 2) What is a  subsidiary ? Small companies. 3) What are the benefits for media companies of  vertical integration ? Companies have more of a chance to make money at every stage of production. 4) What are the benefits for media companies of  horizontal integration ? It allows for companies to widen their audiences and find other ways to make money. 5) Give  three  examples of media companies or brands that have used  synergy  to maximise their profits. 1)  List any tasks you have that are missing or incomplete. Audience: Effects Theory

  1) Write a definition of a  passive  audience:  An audience which accepts the messages encoded in a media text without challenge. 2)  Write a definition of an  active  audience:  When an audience is engaging, interpreting, and responding to media messages  and are able to question the message. 3) Write a definition of the  hypodermic needle  theory:  Media injects its messages straight into passive audience.  4) Write down a  media product  (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame)   for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and  WHY  it fits that particular audience use/gratification.   1) What is the preferred reading of a media text? The message or ideology/belief of producers want the audiences to believe. 2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text? This is when the consumer takes away an opposite message or belief different to what the producers intended. Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown: 3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film? That teenagers are criminals, relentless and violent. 4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer? Demographics and Psychographics

  1) What information do media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience? Class, age, gender, income, race/ethnicity. 2) Why are media companies and advertisers increasingly using audience profiling and not just demographics? It targets a specific group of people which makes it easier for them. 3) What are the seven different Pychographic groups?  Mainstreamer, aspirer, explorer, reformer, succeeder, resigned, struggler. 4) Write a brief summary of what each Psychographic group is seeking or motivated by. The mainstreamers will less likely take risks, the are 40% of the population, they enjoy and trust brands that are value for money and they seek security. The aspirers want status brands, they are happy to invest into luxury goods, they consider themselves stylish and they seek status.
